Native Flowers

Congratulations! You hold in your hand over 1,000 California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) seeds! We have partnered with the Theodore Payne Foundation so that you can enjoy these native flowers in your own yard.

Here are a few reasons native plants and flowers are important:

  • Gardens with native species use less water than gardens with non-natives
  • Native plants provide food and shelter for birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators
  • Native plants usually have less pest problems than non-natives because they have co-evolved with native insects – meaning that you don’t have to use as many pesticides

California’s state flower, the CA poppy, with its bright orange blossoms, is one of our most recognizable annual wildflowers. Best grown from seed sown in fall at the start of the rainy season. No special care is needed, as they will usually germinate even in the poorest of soils with nothing more than rainfall. If planting from seedlings, be careful with sensitive roots and water occasionally until established.

Stored in a cool dry place, these seeds can have a shelf life of up to four years.
