Springtime, and the return of warmer weather, necessitates vigilance in regards to snakes and other various critters. When hiking, you may encounter a rattlesnake, so know what to do, and what not to do.
• Rattlesnakes don’t always rattle before striking defensively
• Stay on the designated trail, and avoid walking in tall grass, weeds or heavy under-brush.
• Wear hiking boots, or other footwear that covers the ankle.
• Do not step or put your hands where you cannot see clearly around them
• Hike with a companion that can assist in an emergency
• If you encounter a rattlesnake on a trail, don’t approach it, it should move away from you
when it realizes you are there.
• If you hike with a dog, always keep the dog on a leash, and a safe distance from snakes or other creatures.
It is a good idea to have your pet receive the Rattlesnake Vaccination.
